What is the Envelope Challenge

The 90 envelope challenge is a money saving challenge. You take 90 envelopes and write one number from 1-90 on each envelope. You then shuffle the envelopes and place them into a bucket or basket (not your cute one).

Each day, you place that amount of money in the envelope. You can choose to either start from day 90 or day 1. Or, if you want to make it fun, each day you can draw an envelope at random and place that amount of cash inside and you do this for 90 days until the envelopes are filled. For the purposes of this challenge, I will be drawing at random so that it doesn’t get to be too much money at once at the beginning or end of the challenge.

The 90 Day Envelope Challenge is my take on the 100 Day Envelope Challenge where you save $5k. I prefer to attempt an even 3 months which will end on my birthday. You can do this challenge as many times as you need and at whatever pace your budget allows.

The key to this savings plan is to not take more money than you can afford. If completing this challenge in 90 days will make you worse off than before, only complete as much as you can. So if in 90 days you’ve only stuffed 30 envelopes, that’s still a win because you’ve save more money than you would have otherwise.

I’m also keeping my interest-bearing savings withdrawals at this time. I only deposit about $25 every pay to go towards my rainy day fund ($15) and an account I have for unexpected childcare expenses ($10). This may seem like nothing but it adds up when it comes out without you knowing or missing the money.

Supplies

  • 90 envelopes from the dollar store
  • Some cute container to stuff the envelopes

If there is one thing that keeps me motivated it’s cute things and accountability buddies! I seen the cutest Patron box on TikTok for someone completing this challenge. All the comments were asking about the box and the creator shared a video saying it’s not important. But let’s be real, YES TF IT IS! I’m at least 5x more likely to stick with something when I’m invested. If the box is eye catching, I am more likely to be thinking about how much I want to fill it. It’s like science, maybe not, but it feels like it!

Rules

  • Number 90 envelopes 1-90 and store somewhere
  • Each day choose one envelope and insert the corresponding amount in cash
  • Place the stuffed envelope into your savings box
  • Complete this process until no empty envelopes are left

You’re now a $4,095naire!
