Design Concept

As I explained before, most of my design concept came from Pinterest. I scoured TikTok and Pinterest for inspiration for a Marvel themed boys room. What I finally came up with was results for teens and even adult game rooms, but there wasn’t really much specific to boys his age. I pieced things together as I saw different aspects I liked.

I knew for a fact the wall lights were non-negotiable. In every room that I liked, they were included. So I built my ideas around them. Another thing that was in most of the best kids rooms were these extravagant large “murals” that was either painted on or a decal. I wasn’t ready for that kind of DIY project at the time, so I settled with just the wall decals that come behind the lamps.

I wanted to stick to an Avengers theme, however, a lot of what I was finding was Spiderman. Since we (like it’s my room too) love Spiderman, this was no issue to collide the ideas. This led me to go for a “Marvel” design instead of Avengers specifically.

The overall inspiration for the room was something he can grow into. Even though we’re going through a Batman phase currently, his love for Marvel characters has not faded.

Color Palette and Decor

This color palette was simple and all my son’s favorites. We stuck with red, blue, and gray. I chose to get silver pictures frames so there was some contrast with the gray walls. The few red things in the room seem to be the consistent, but the blue was rough! Some is navy, others are bright blue. The navy’s were the colors I couldn’t get to match. I had to buy the bed skirt separately from the sheets and it’s still bothering me. If you can purchase as a set, that would be wise!

I do intend to get curtain in here at some point but I’m a sucker for natural lighting. The curtains will likely be navy, but I think red would tie things together as well.

Color Choices:
  • Rug: Navy (Amazon)
  • Bedding: Gray (Walmart)
  • Walls: Gray (Lowe’s)
  • Frames: Silver (Dollar Store)
  • Headboard: Gray (Value City)
  • Lamps: Red and green (Spiderman and Hulk)

Storage Solutions

I like to opt for functional decor. This Avengers themed toy box from Walmart was the perfect way to incorporate storage and decor! I already had cubes and a cart for his learning activities. Although the brown organizer does not tie into my color scheme, it stayed because we’re on a budget.

Furniture Arrangement and Layout

I have been known to rearrange a time or two (or 50). Check out the evolution of this room below. I started out wanting it on the wall with the decorations, then my son asked that the bed be next to the door, then I wanted it back on the other wall because I didn’t like the small space between the wall and bed. Small spaces just create storage for junk!

I made sure to incorporate a play zone with the rug, and learning center with the white board.

DIY Projects

There really weren’t many DIY projects in this case. A lot of assembly! But no DIY. The only thing I did myself was printing the pictures for the frames. I had my family’s help painting and that was it. This project is very BIY (buy-it-yourself) for us non-creatives.

Safety Considerations

I typically don’t like to place anything above my bed. If you are also like that you may want to reconsider the pictures (like I did) and choose another wall for them. The sign stayed because it was pretty secure, as were the lamps.

Budgeting Tips

Lessons Learned

  • Again, I would not put the bed under the pictures. That’s my number one regret. It didn’t cause any accidents, but it makes me uneasy.
  • Curtains are necessary to tie it together.
  • Purchase everything over time or save for it before hand.
  • Less is more. Less about the design and more about his toys. I have a hoarding mindset and never want to get rid of his toys but I feel like at least before every Christmas some things have to go! Same with clothes and shoes.
